Japan-Peru Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On August 8, commencing at 5:10 p.m. for approximately 45 minutes, Mr.IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Elmer José Germán Gonzalo SCHIALER SALCEDO, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Peru, who was visiting Japan on the occasion of the Expo 2025, Osaka, Kansai, Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Iwaya extended a warm welcome to Minister Schialer, and stated that he would like to further strengthen relations with Peru, an important country that owns more than 150 years of amicable diplomatic relations and the community of Japanese immigrants and descendants (Nikkei), which is the second largest in South America with approximately 200,000 members.
- In response, Foreign Minister Schialer expressed that he was pleased to meet Minister Iwaya again for the first time since November last year, appreciating the steady progress of cooperation based on the Roadmap adopted at the summit meeting in November last year, and stated that he hoped to further deepen relations between the two countries on the occasion of President Boluarte’s visit to Japan.
- Minister Iwaya stated that, in addition to the provision of Japanese-made fire trucks and water wagons, on which notes were signed earlier, he was pleased that Japan’s cooperation such as loan to a microfinance institution would contribute to the reduction of the economic and social gap between the capital region and the rest of the country, and that he would like to continue contributing to the sustainable development of Peru. Foreign Minister Schialer expressed his gratitude for Japan's cooperation.
- The two Ministers confirmed and appreciated the progress made in cooperation in various fields, including the economy, people-to-people exchanges, and defense cooperation, and concurred to continue promoting further collaboration.
- They also exchanged views on international affairs, such as their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues and the abductions issue. Minister Iwaya asked for the continued understanding and cooperation for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue and gained the strong support from Foreign Minister Schialer.
