Signing and Exchange of Notes concerning Japan’s Provision of Fire Trucks and Water Wagons to the Republic of Peru (Grant Aid “the Economic and Social Development Programme”)

August 8, 2025

On August 8, in Tokyo, following Japan-Peru Summit Meeting, Mr. YAMAMOTO Takeshi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Peru and H.E. Mr. Elmer José Germán Gonzalo SCHIALER SALCEDO, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Peru, signed and exchanged notes concerning Japan’s grant aid of 300 million Japanese yen for “the Economic and Social Development Programme” (provision of fire trucks and water wagons).

  1. Peru, like Japan, is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire and has historically been prone to numerous earthquakes and tsunami disasters. In recent years, in addition to floods and landslides caused by climate change and El Niño phenomena, frequent forest fires have been occurring in areas covering approximately 60% of the country's land area, leaving the country vulnerable to such natural disasters.
  2. The fire trucks and water wagons to be provided by Japan are designed to respond swiftly to forest fires that frequently occur in steep terrain. It is expected that this cooperation will enhance Peru's capacity to respond to forest fires, thereby preventing the expansion of damage and minimizing the impact on the Peruvian people's lives and economy.
