Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister IWAYA by President AKANE of the International Criminal Court (ICC)

On August 8, from 13:05 to 13:15, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call from H.E. Judge AKANE Tomoko, President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), during her visit to Japan. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister IWAYA conveyed that Japan will continue to strongly support the ICC. Minister IWAYA also conveyed that it is important that the ICC can fulfill its role as a cornerstone of the rule of law.
  2. In response, President AKANE extended her appreciation for Japan’s consistent contributions to the ICC’s activities and said that she looks forward to the continued support.
  3. The two sides exchanged views on the circumstances surrounding the ICC and confirmed their continued cooperation toward maintaining and strengthening the rule of law within the international community.
