Japan-Australia Foreign Minister’s Telephone Meeting

On August 8, commencing at 10:45 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone meeting with Senator the Hon. Penny WONG, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Australia. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Minister Iwaya expressed his welcome for the recent announcement by the Australian government selecting the upgraded Japanese Mogami-class frigate as their next general-purpose frigate. He stated that this selection represents a significant step forward in elevating security cooperation and the overall relationship between Japan and Australia to new heights and Minister Wong concurred with Minister Iwaya’s remark.
- The two ministers also exchanged views on the current international situation, including the Middle East.
- The two ministers shared the view that they advance concrete cooperation steadily between the two countries, in light of the 50th anniversary in 2026 of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Japan and Australia.
