Japan-U.S. Vice-Ministers’ Meeting

On July 18, commencing at 3:30 p.m. for approximately 35 minutes, Mr. FUNAKOSHI Takehiro, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with the Honorable Christopher Landau, Deputy Secretary of State of the United States of America, who is visiting Japan to participate in the U.S. National Day Event of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. The overview is as follows.

  1. Vice Minister Funakoshi welcomed Deputy Secretary Landau’s visit to Japan. Both sides concurred on the importance of further deepening Japan-U.S. cooperation in various fields, including security and economy. They affirmed that they would continue to work closely together to further develop the Japan-U.S. relations.
  2. The two sides concurred on the importance of further strengthening the deterrence and response capabilities of the Japan-U.S. Alliance and they affirmed that they would continue concrete discussions, including through a Japan-U.S. Security Consultative Committee (SCC) (Japan-U.S. “2+2”) meeting.
  3. The two sides discussed the roles that both countries should play in the region to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific (FOIP), and concurred that they would hold the first consultation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the U.S. Department of State on concrete measures at an appropriate time.
  4. The two sides exchanged views on issues related to China and their policies toward North Korea including the abductions issue, and they affirmed that Japan and the United States would continue to work closely to address these issues, building on the prior discussions held at the Japan-U.S.-ROK Trilateral Vice Foreign Ministerial Meeting, which had taken place immediately beforehand.
  5. The two sides concurred to regularly hold Japan-U.S. Vice-Ministers’ Meetings to further deepen Japan-U.S. cooperation.
