Signing Ceremony for the Japan-Canada Agreement on the Security of Information and Japan-Canada Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (Working Dinner)



On July 8, commencing at 7:00 p.m. for approximately 90 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held Japan-Canada bilateral meeting, a signing ceremony for the Agreement on the Security of Information, a joint press conference, and a working dinner with the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, during her visit to Japan. The overview is as follows:
1. Japan-Canada relations
The Ministers commended the steady progress made in cooperation under the “Japan-Canada Action Plan for contributing to a free and open Indo-Pacific region”, including security and rule of law, economy such as energy sector, and people-to-people exchanges, and discussed ways to further advance bilateral cooperation.
The Ministers welcomed the signing of the Agreement on the Security of Information and shared the view to sign the Agreement concerning Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology and the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty at an early date.
2. Regional and International Affairs
The Ministers exchanged views on the regional and international affairs, including on the situations in the Indo-Pacific amidst the ongoing severe international environment, as well as the increasingly uncertain global economy. The Ministers confirmed their continued collaboration between Japan and Canada, including within the G7 under Canada’s G7 Presidency this year.
3. Signing of the Agreement on the Security of Information
Prior to the working dinner, the Ministers signed the Agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of Canada on the Security of Information. Following the signing ceremony, the Ministers held a joint press announcement.
