Japan-Canada Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Meeting

On May 29, commencing at 8:15 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a telephone meeting with the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Iwaya extended congratulations on the victory in the recent Canadian federal election and on Minister Anand’s appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and expressed his desire to work together with Minister Anand on close cooperation between Japan and Canada, including within the G7.
- Minister Iwaya stated that he would like to further strengthen Japan-Canada Strategic Partnership with Minister Anand based on "Japan-Canada Action Plan for contributing to a free and open Indo-Pacific region", which functions as the guiding compass. The two Ministers then discussed a wide range of issues on bilateral relations, including the areas of economy such as energy sector. Ministers also concurred on the importance of the Japan-Canada Information Security Agreement, which was agreed in principle in March.
- The two Ministers held discussions on international issues, such as the situation in East Asia including policies toward North Korea’s nuclear and missile issues, the situation in the Middle East, and the situation in Ukraine. Minister Iwaya asked for Minister Anand's understanding and cooperation for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue of Japanese nationals.
- The two Ministers expressed their hope to hold an in-person meeting at an early timing.
