On May 29, from 4:45 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with Japan (led by Ms. Elżbieta Katarzyna ŁUKACIJEWSKA, Chair of the delegation), during their visit to Japan to attend the 42nd Japan-EU Interparliamentary Conference. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya welcomed the delegation from the European Parliament and stated that parliamentary exchanges between Japan and the EU have played a significant role in deepening and diversifying Japan-EU relations. Minister Iwaya emphasized that cooperation among like-minded countries is more crucial than ever in this international environment. Minister Iwaya also expressed his hope to further strengthen cooperation between Japan and the EU across all aspects, including political, security, and economic spheres.
  2. In response, Ms. ŁUKACIJEWSKA and Mr. Roberts ZĪLE, Vice-President of the European Parliament, emphasized their hope to promote cooperation across a wide range of areas between Japan and the EU, sharing values and principles, including freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. They stated their intention to further promote parliamentary exchanges between Japan and the EU.
  3. Both sides exchanged views on regional issues, including situations of Ukraine and East Asia, and a free and open, rules-based multilateral trading system, among other issues.
