Japan-Germany Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Meeting

On May 19, commencing at 15:35 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone meeting with H.E. Dr. Johann Wadephul, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Federal Republic of Germany. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya expressed his congratulations to Minister Wadephul on his inauguration and his appointment as Foreign Minister. Minister Iwaya pointed out that Germany is an important partner sharing values and principles and expressed his willingness to closely work with Minister Wadephul to further strengthen Japan-Germany relations bilaterally and within the framework of the G7. In response, Minister Wadephul stated that he would strengthen cooperation with Japan, as an important partner sharing fundamental values in the Indo-Pacific.
  2. The two ministers reaffirmed the shared recognition that the security of Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific is inseparable and confirmed their commitment to further strengthen cooperation in the fields of foreign policy and security through such the frameworks as “2+2”. They also shared views to strengthen cooperation in the field of economic security.
  3. The two ministers also exchanged views on the situation in Europe and in the Indo-Pacific such as the situation in Ukraine and their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues and the abductions issue, and confirmed that they will work closely together on various challenges, that the international community is faced with.
