Japan-Chile Foreign Ministers' Meeting

On May 15, commencing at 6:00 p.m. for approximately 45 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeru, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Alberto Leo VAN KLAVEREN STROK, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Chile, who was paying a visit to Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Minister Iwya expressed his desire to further strengthen relations with Chile, a strategic partner that will celebrate the 130th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2027.In response, Minister Van Klaveren expressed his gratitude for the heartfelt welcome he received during his visit to Japan and his desire to further develop the relationship between the two countries.
  2. Minister Iwaya stated that he welcomes the progress being made in bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas, such as the economy, including mineral resources, security, disaster prevention, space and astronomy, and science and technology. In response, Minister Van Klaveren stated that he hopes to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in a wide range of fields.
  3. The two ministers confirmed that they will work closely together in the international arena and also expressed their intention to collaborate through frameworks such as the CPTPP.
  4. The two ministers also exchanged views on the situation in East Asia such as their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues and the abductions issue. Minister Iwaya asked for Minister Van Klaveren’s continued understanding and cooperation for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue and gained the support.
