Dispatch of Japanese Expert Teams in the field of the road sector for earthquake damage in Thailand
Workshop on the inspection of road bridges

In response to the damage in Thailand caused by the earthquake in central Myanmar, the Government of Japan dispatches a team of experts in the road sector, consisting of officials from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan, JICA, and others, to hold a workshop on road bridge inspection and other issues with Thai government officials in Bangkok on April 10 (local time).

  1. Based on the report of the experts in the road sector dispatched recently, a team of experts in the road sector from Japan will be dispatched again to the workshop to introduce Japan's experience and strengths in overcoming numerous earthquake disasters and to exchange opinions with those concerned in Thailand regarding post-earthquake road bridge inspections and other issues.
  2. We will spare no effort to provide Thailand with necessary support and cooperation so that the people of Thailand, our long-time friends, can regain a safe and secure life as soon as possible.

The earthquake that struck central Myanmar at around 3:20pm on March 28 (12:50 pm local time) damaged numerous buildings and roads, mainly in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. According to the Thai government, 23 people were killed and 36 injured in the metropolitan area. Many high-rise buildings in Bangkok and other areas were partially damaged or cracked. Airport and transportation services were temporarily suspended but resumed the next morning.
On April 4-5, three Japanese experts in the field of the road sector visited Bangkok to exchange opinions with Thai government officials and inspect elevated road construction sites.
