The 7th Japan-India Maritime Affairs Dialogue

On April 2, the 7th Japan-India Maritime Affairs Dialogue was held in Tokyo. Mr. KASHIWABARA Yutaka, Deputy Director-General of the Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs Department, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Muanpuii Saiawi Joint Secretary, Disarmament & International Security Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, and other relevant officials participated in the Dialogue.

  1. During the dialogue, both sides discussed their assessments of the situation and regional challenges in the Indo-Pacific. To realize a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, they concurred on the necessity of both countries continuing close cooperation to maintain and strengthen the maritime order based on the rule of law.
  2. In addition, both countries welcomed steady progress in maritime cooperation, including the regular conduct of joint exercises and ongoing coordination for ship maintenance in India, and they shared views on potential areas for future collaboration.
  3. Furthermore, recognizing the importance not only of bilateral cooperation but of cooperation among like-minded countries, including Japan, India, the United States, and Australia, both sides discussed the strengthening of coordination through multilateral frameworks.
