Grant Assistance to the Federative Republic of Brazil: Signing and Exchange of Notes on “the Project for Enhancing the Resilience of Key Industries to Natural Disasters in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (in cooperation with UNIDO)”

On March 26, in Tokyo, Mr. ISHIZUKI Hideo, Director-General, International Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Ms. ADACHI Fumio, Head, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Investment and Technology Promotion Office, Tokyo, signed and exchanged notes for “the Project for Enhancing the Resilience of Key Industries to Natural Disasters in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (in cooperation with UNIDO)” (grant amount: 104.703 million yen).
- In the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, floods caused by heavy rainfall in May 2024 resulted in extensive human losses with over 150 casualties and more than 2.3 million residents affected. Additionally, the state's key industries such as agriculture and livestock farming, also suffered significant losses.
- This project aims to strengthen the resilience of industries against natural disasters through analyzing the damage of flooding on key industries and value chains such as agriculture and livestock farming, utilizing digital technology, as well as through conducting disaster prevention awareness activities, providing training on infrastructure resilience and supporting the formulation of disaster prevention policies. These efforts are expected to contribute to sustainable development of Brazil.
- Furthermore, H.E. Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, and H.E. Mr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, have announced to enhance cooperation for strengthening disaster resilience in the “Japan-Brazil Strategic and Global Partnership Action Plan (2025-2030)”, and this project will be implemented as part of the commitment.
