Foreign Minister Iwaya making request to Ambassador-Designate Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Denmark

On January 10 commencing at 16:00 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan met H.E. Mr. Jarl Kåre Frijs-Madsen, Ambassador-Designate Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and made requested on the Danish government's decision on the Paul Watson case. The overview is as follows.

  1. Minister Iwaya stated that the Danish government's decision not to extradite Paul Watson to Japan was extremely regrettable, as the Japanese government's request for extradition was not accepted by the Danish government, despite the fact that this case was a matter of maritime law enforcement and that Japan has been dealing with the matter based on the law and evidence. Minister Iwaya stated that it was also extremely regrettable that the decision was made in a manner that placed responsibility on the Japanese side citing criminal justice system as the rationale.
  2. Both sides confirmed that they would continue to work closely with each other.
