Meeting with the Liberal Democratic Party's Special Committee on Whaling

On December 24, commencing at 1.45 p.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, received a resolution from members of the Liberal Democratic Party’s Special Committee on Whaling, Mr. TSURUHO Yosuke, Chairperson, Mr. HAMADA Yasukazu, Supreme Advisor, and Mr. EJIMA Kiyoshi, Deputy Chairperson. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Chairperson Tsuruho, expressed his extreme regret and dissatisfaction with the Danish government's decision on the Paul Watson case and he presented to Minister Iwaya a resolution on refusal of extradition of Paul Watson. The resolution states that the Danish government’s response is truly regrettable and unsatisfactory and that, in light of this decision, it is necessary to examine the impact on the future bilateral relations with the Danish government that did not accept Japan’s position, which is based on law and evidence.
  2. In response, Foreign Minister Iwaya stated that he would closely examine the measures taken to date and consider future measures in light of this resolution, and that he would continue to make efforts to cooperate with the international community and to strengthen global communication.
