Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister Iwaya by President Akane of the International Criminal Court (ICC)

On December 18, commencing at 18:45 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call from H.E. Judge AKANE Tomoko, President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), during her visit to Japan. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows.
- Minister IWAYA paid tribute to the efforts of the ICC in promoting the rule of law in light of the severe international environment and conveyed that Japan will continue to strongly support the ICC.
- Minister IWAYA also stated that it is important that independence of the ICC and its security is respected so that it can fulfill its role and functions.
- In response, President Akane extended her appreciation for Japan’s consistent cooperation with the ICC and said that she looks forward for Japan’s continued support.
- The two sides then shared the view of strengthening coordination and cooperation between Japan and the ICC and confirmed to continue working together to strengthen the rule of law in the international community.
