Awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo (Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations)
(Statement by Foreign Minister IWAYA Takeshi)
December 10, 2024
- I heartily express my congratulations that Nihon Hidankyo (Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations) received this year’s Nobel Peace Prize at the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony held in Oslo, Norway, on December 10. It is extremely meaningful that Nihon Hidankyo, which has been working for many years on elimination of nuclear weapons and promotion of understanding of the realities of nuclear weapons use, received such a prestigious award.
- As the only country to have ever suffered atomic bombings during war, Japan has a historic mission to lead international efforts towards a world without nuclear weapons. The Government of Japan will continue to strengthen its practical and realistic efforts towards a world without nuclear weapons and is determined to further promote understanding of the reality of nuclear weapons use, which is the important starting point for all efforts towards nuclear disarmament, in cooperation with Nihon Hidankyo and other A-bomb survivors.
