Japan-Indonesia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Meeting

On October 31, commencing at 12:45 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a telephone meeting with H.E. Mr. Sugiono, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister IWAYA expressed his congratulations on the inauguration of President Prabowo and Minister Sugiono's appointment as Minister for Foreign Affairs, and stated that Japan and Indonesia are "Comprehensive Strategic Partners" sharing fundamental values and principles and that he would like to work closely with Minister Sugiono to further develop bilateral relations. In response, Minister Sugiono extended gratitude for the dispatch of Mr. KOMURA Masahiko as the Ambassador on Special Mission to the presidential inauguration ceremony. Minister Sugiono also stated that he expects to further develop the strong partnership with Japan and expressed his desire to cooperate with Minister IWAYA.
  2. Regarding the bilateral cooperation, Minister IWAYA stated that Japan would like to advance cooperation not only in such areas as infrastructure, climate change and energy but also in new areas such as school meal program to which Indonesia’s new administration attaches importance. Minister IWAYA also stated that Japan places importance on collaborating with Indonesia in maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law, and expressed his desire to further enhance security cooperation. In response, Minister Sugiono expressed his gratitude for Japan’s cooperation in a wide range of areas including school meal program. The two Ministers confirmed that they will work together to further strengthen the bilateral relations.
  3. The two Ministers also exchanged views on regional and international issues including the situation in North Korea such as today’s launch of an ICBM-class ballistic missile by North Korea, as well as the situation in the East and South China Seas, and confirmed that they will cooperate closely on these issues.
