Situation in Israel and Lebanon (Statement by Foreign Minister IWAYA Takeshi)
October 15, 2024
- Japan expresses its serious concern about the fact that the attack by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on October 11 caused injuries to the peacekeepers of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and that IDF entered the premises of the UNIFIL compound on October 13.
- Attacks against personnel acting for the United Nations are unacceptable, and Japan condemns all threats to the safety and security of UNIFIL.
- In order to prevent further deterioration of the situation, Japan calls for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, and urges all parties to abide by international law, including international humanitarian law, to ensure the security of UN personnel, and to fully implement relevant UN Security Council Resolutions, including UNSCR 1701. In order to prevent further escalation, Japan strongly urges them to exercise maximum restraint and to make sincere efforts for a diplomatic settlement.
