Japan-U.S.-ROK Senior Official Telephone Talk on North Korea

On October 9, Mr. Namazu Hiroyuki, Assistant-Minister and Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a Japan-U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK) Senior Official Telephone Talk on North Korea with Mr. Cho Koo-rae, Vice Minister for Strategy and Intelligence of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, and Mr. Daniel J. Kritenbrink, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific , Department of State of the United States of America.

  1. They reiterated their shared view that North Korea’s continued nuclear and ballistic missile programs constitute a grave and imminent threat to the regional security and pose a clear and serious challenge to the international community. They also reaffirmed their continued grave concern over the development of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea. Based on this recognition, they exchanged their views on the current situation in North Korea following its recent announcements and aligned their perspectives.

Furthermore, based on the outcomes of and progresses following the Japan-U.S.-ROK Summit Meeting at Camp David in August last year, they reaffirmed that they would continue to work closely together toward the complete denuclearization of North Korea in accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions, including through enhancement of deterrence and response capabilities including trilateral security cooperation, engagements at related multilateral fora, and international collaboration including cooperation with like-minded countries.
  3. Assistant-Minister Namazu also asked for continued understanding and cooperation on the abductions issue, and gained support from the two senior officials.
