Japan-Australia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Meeting

On October 7, commencing at 11:50 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone meeting with Senator the Hon. Penny WONG, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Australia. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Wong expressed her congratulations to Minister Iwaya on his appointment as Foreign Minister. In response, Minister Iwaya conveyed that Australia is an indispensable friend to Japan and expressed his desire to closely cooperate with Minister Wong.
  2. The two ministers shared their views on strategic environments surrounding both countries and concurred to cooperate across a wide range of areas, including security, to further deepen the “Special Strategic Partnership” between Japan and Australia and to realize a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”.
  3. The two ministers concurred to enhance the vibrant and multilayered people-to-people exchanges between Japan and Australia, which underpin the strong bilateral relationship, including in areas such as tourism, business, and overseas education programs.
  4. The two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to further advancing cooperation in the fields of resources and energy, as well as economic security.
