On August 30th, commencing at 11:15 a.m. for approximately 35 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call by the delegation led by Senator William Hagerty, United States Senate. The overview is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Minister Kamikawa welcomed the delegation on their visit to Japan. She also expressed that Japan and the U.S. are global partners bound by deep trust and multilayered friendship, working closely together to address issues of the international society, as confirmed during Prime Minister Kishida's official visit to the U.S. in April. The attending Senators agreed with this point.
  2. Both sides exchanged views on regional issues, including China and responses to North Korea, including the abductions issue, as well as common challenges for Japan and the U.S. such as economic security. They also reaffirmed the importance of strengthening cooperation between Japan and the U.S. including Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and energy, as well as the network of like-minded countries centered around Japan and the U.S. amidst an increasingly severe security environment in the Indo-Pacific region.
  3. Furthermore, Minister Kamikawa referred to the recent Japan-India 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial Meeting and the 2024 Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting, emphasizing the importance of cooperation with the "Global South" toward realizing a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific."
