Japan-Madagascar Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On August 25, commencing at 3:30 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Ms. Rafaravavitafika RASATA, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Madagascar, who is visiting Japan to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Kamikawa stated that the experiences gained during her visit to Madagascar this April have been utilized for this TICAD Ministerial Meeting. Minister Kamikawa then stated that Madagascar is an important partner from a viewpoint of promoting a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” (FOIP) and economic security, and that she would like to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation in the international arena with Madagascar. In response, Minister Rasata congratulated the successful organization of the TICAD Ministerial Meeting and expressed her intention to further strengthen the favorable relationship between the two countries.
  2. Minister Kamikawa then informed Japan’s decision to implement the Project for Extension and Improvement of Water Supply System in Toamasina. In response, Minister Rasata expressed her appreciation for the assistance provided by Japan and explained that progress has been made with regards to the issue related to Japanese companies. Minister Rasata also expressed her expectations for the promotion of investment from Japan. The two Ministers confirmed that the two countries would advance collaboration through the co-creation for common agenda initiative, including human resource development in the mining sector.
  3. The two Ministers confirmed that they would further develop Japan-Madagascar relations towards TICAD 9 in the coming year.
  4. In addition, the two Ministers had an exchange of views on cooperation in the international arena, such as Security Council reform, the situations in Ukraine and the situations in North Korea including the abductions issue.
