Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister Kamikawa by President Akane of the International Criminal Court (ICC)

On August 22, commencing at 2:20 p.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call from H.E. Judge AKANE Tomoko, President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), during her visit to Japan. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows.

  1. Minister Kamikawa welcomed President Akane’s visit and stated that Japan attaches great importance to the role of the ICC and will continue to support the work of the ICC with the aim of garnering broader support for the ICC from the international community.
  2. Minister Kamikawa also introduced Japan’s efforts to increase the number of States Parties to the Rome Statute, and to foster human resource in the field of international law, including the “Tokyo International Law Seminar”.
  3. In response, President Akane extended her appreciation for Japan’s recent approach under the initiative of Minister Kamikawa and said that she looks forward for Japan’s continued support.
  4. The two sides then shared the view of strengthening coordination and cooperation between Japan and the ICC and confirmed to continue working together to strengthen the rule of law in the international community.
