Exchange of Notes concerning Grant Aid to Palestine “Food Assistance Programme (through WFP)”
August 15, 2024
On August 14, 2024, H.E. Mr. NAKASHIMA Yoichi, Ambassador for the Palestinian Affairs and Representative of Japan to Palestine, and Mr. Antoine Renard, Representative and Country Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Palestine signed and exchanged notes for the Grant Aid to Palestine “Food Assistance Programme (through WFP)” (grant amount: 4 hundred million yen) in Ramallah.
- In Palestine, the food situation is worsening due to high unemployment rate, deterioration of economic and fiscal circumstances, and logistical difficulties, as well as soaring global food prices due to the Ukraine crisis. There is an urgent need for food assistance, with the entire population of the Gaza Strip facing a food crisis particularly since the outbreak of conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants on October 7, 2023.
- Based on the request from the Palestinian Authority, this cooperation will provide food assistance to improve food security and contribute to the solution of development challenges in Palestine. It is also expected to contribute to the stability and improvement of public welfare based on human security, which is one of the pillars of Japan’s basic aid policy toward Palestine.
