Number of Visas Issued in 2023

- The total number of visas issued by all Japanese embassies, consulates, and consular offices in 2023 was 4,165,752, an increase of approximately 222% from 2022.
- The number of visas issued has recovered to about 50% compared to 2019, which marked a record high number of visas issued.
- When ranked by nationalities and regions, the top three recipients of Japanese visas were China, the Philippines, and the Vietnam which accounted for nearly 80% of the total number of visas issued. Among the overseas establishments of Japan that issued visas, Consulate-General of Japan in Shanghai, Embassy of Japan in China, Embassy of Japan in the Philippines were the top three missions issuing visas. The top 10 missions were all in Asia.

The number of visas issued differs from the number of foreign nationals entering Japan which is released by the Immigration Services Agency as there are cases of using multiple visas and visa exemption.
