(Statement by Foreign Minister KAMIKAWA Yoko)

June 11, 2024
  1. Japan welcomes the adoption of the United Nations Security Council resolution(UNSCR)2735 on the situation in Gaza on June 10 local time, which welcomes the new proposal announced on May 31 regarding the release of the hostages and the ceasefire, calls upon Hamas to accept it, and urges the both parties to fully implement its terms and without delay and without condition. Japan strongly urges both parties to implement this resolution in good faith to realize the release of all hostages and a sustainable ceasefire.
  2. Japan strongly supports U.S. President Biden's initiative announced on May 31 regarding the negotiation between Israel and Hamas on the hostage release and ceasefire, and strongly urges all parties concerned to seize this opportunity and steadily work toward the release of all hostages and a sustainable ceasefire. In light of this basic position, Japan voted in favor of this resolution.
  3. Japan will continue to actively and persistently make diplomatic efforts, such as reaching out to the countries concerned, from the perspective of what the most pragmatic approach is to improve the situation. At the same time, Japan also urges all parties to abide by international law, including international humanitarian law, and to act in good faith based on relevant UNSCRs, including the recently adopted resolution 2735 to prevent further civilian casualties.
