Video Message by Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, at ‘Three Seas Summit 2024’
On April 11, Three Seas Summit was held in Vilnius, Lithuania, the host country of this year’s Three Seas Initiative(3SI), and Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs delivered a video message as the representative of Japan. The following is a summary of the message.
- Minister KAMIKAWA stated in her message that she was honored to give a speech in this year’s Summit as Japan has just become a Strategic Partner of the 3SI from this year, and that Japan strongly supports the 3SI with its recognition that the security of Euro-Atlantic is inseparable from that of the Indo-Pacific.
- Minister KAMIKAWA also mentioned that Japan reinforces its involvement in the 3SI in collaboration with partners both inside and outside of the region as Japan has focused on strengthening connectivity among European states and the one among the Baltic States in particular, and that the connectivity between the northern part of the region and the south playing an essential role in assistance and support for Ukraine is ever more important.
- Furthermore, Minister KAMIKAWA stated that Japan would play an active role in order to encourage further participation of Japanese companies under the 3SI, referring the outcome of the Japan-Ukraine Conference for Promotion of Economic Growth and Reconstruction held on February 19.
Three Seas Initiative was established in 2015 to strengthen connectivity and reduce the disparities in Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic states. It promotes development of infrastructure in the energy, transport and digital sectors in the region surrounded by three seas (Baltic Sea, Black Sea and Adriatic Sea). Currently, thirteen countries are the members of the 3SI (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Greece).
