Situation surrounding Ecuador and Mexico

  1. On April 5 (local time), the Ecuadorian police made an unauthorized entry into the Embassy  of Mexico in Ecuador, while requesting the extradition of former Vice President Glas who had applied for asylum at the Embassy, and took the former Vice President into custody.
  2. As a country that attaches great importance to the rule of law, Japan condemns any act that violates the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations which stipulates that the premises of a diplomatic mission are inviolable.
  3. Mexico and Ecuador are both important partners of Japan, and we expect that the two countries will swiftly resolve the situation through dialogue.

Former Vice President Jorge Glas faces criminal charges in Ecuador and sought asylum at the Embassy of Mexico in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. On April 5 (local time), Ecuadorian police entered the embassy and detained the former Vice President, on the grounds that the embassy did not comply with Ecuador’s extradition request. In response, on April 6, the Government of Mexico announced that it severed diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
