Entry into force of the “Singapore Convention on Mediation” for Japan

- On April 1, the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation (Singapore Convention on Mediation) entered into force for Japan.
- This Convention establishes a framework for, including but not limited to, enforcement of international settlement agreements resulting from mediation in order to promote the use of mediation as a method of resolving international commercial disputes.
- It is expected that the entry into force of this Convention for Japan will further facilitate the use of mediation, and that it will contribute to expanding Japanese companies’ overseas businesses and to attracting foreign investment in Japan, thereby leading to its economic development.

- Japan deposited the instrument of accession to the Singapore Convention on Mediation on October 1, 2023.
- The number of the Parties to this Convention is 14 countries at this time, and Japan is the 12th Party.
