Adoption of the United Nations Security Council resolution 2728 on the Situation in Gaza
(Statement by Foreign Minister KAMIKAWA Yoko)

March 27, 2024
  1. Japan welcomes the adoption of the United Nations Security Council resolution(UNSCR) 2728 on the situation in Gaza on March 25 local time, which demands an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
  2. Japan, which assumes the presidency of the Security Council for this month (March), worked as a co-penholder of this resolution together with other non-permanent members of the Council, actively engaged in the discussion and coordination within the Council to ensure that the Council can appropriately express its intent, and voted in favor of the resolution.
  3. Japan, having unequivocally condemned terror attacks by Hamas and others, remains seriously concerned about the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza and has been making various diplomatic efforts towards ensuring a conducive environment for sufficient humanitarian assistance activities, promptly realizing a humanitarian ceasefire that leads to the release of the remaining hostages, and then achieving a sustainable ceasefire.
  4. Japan will continue to actively and persistently make diplomatic efforts, such as reaching out to the countries concerned, from the perspective of what the most pragmatic approach is to improve the situation. At the same time, Japan also urges all parties to abide by international law, including international humanitarian law, and to act in good faith based on relevant UNSCRs, including the recently adopted resolution 2728.
