Courtesy call on Foreign Minister Kamikawa by Deputy Secretary Campbell and Undersecretary of Bilateral Relations and ASEAN Affairs Lazaro

On March 21, commencing at 5:30 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call by The Honorable Kurt M. Campbell, Deputy Secretary of State of the United States, and The Honorable Maria Theresa P. Lazaro, Undersecretary of Bilateral Relations and ASEAN Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Philippines, in Tokyo. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Kamikawa welcomed the progress made in Japan-U.S.-Philippines cooperation since last year, referring to the Japan-U.S.-Philippines Foreign Ministers' Meeting held last September which she attended. Minister Kamikawa then stated that the importance of Japan- U.S.-Philippines cooperation has been increasing to maintain and strengthen the free and open international order based on the rule of law. Minister Kamikawa also stated that she would like to strengthen and materialize Japan U.S.-Philippines cooperation in cooperation with Deputy Secretary Campbell and Undersecretary Lazaro, bearing in mind the Japan- U.S.-Philippines Summit scheduled in April, and Deputy Secretary Campbell and Undersecretary Lazaro concurred on this view.
  2. The three sides exchanged views on regional issues, including the situation in the East and South China Seas, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and North Korea's nuclear and missile activities, as well as cooperation among the three countries including in the economic field. The three sides concurred that it is essential to continue to strengthen Japan-U.S., Japan-Philippines, and U.S.-Philippines cooperations respectively and to make concrete progress in Japan-U.S.-Philippines cooperation for maintaining peace and prosperity in the region.
