Adoption of the United Nations Security Council resolution 2727 on the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan
(Statement by Press Secretary KOBAYASHI Maki)
March 16, 2024
- Japan welcomes the unanimous adoption of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution 2727 renewing the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for one year on March 15 local time. Japan, as a pen-holder on Afghanistan in the Council, drafted and led the negotiation.
- UNAMA’s engagement with the Taliban and its role in realizing peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region are crucial as the Taliban is further increasing restrictions on the rights of women and girls and the dire human rights and humanitarian situation continues. Japan will continue to support UNAMA’s activities.
- Japan will continuously contribute to the discussion on Afghanistan in the Security Council and other international fora toward the formation of a coordinated approach by the international community to the challenges Afghanistan faces.
- With a view to preventing further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, Japan continues to provide humanitarian assistance and basic needs assistance to the Afghan people in cooperation with the international community. In addition, Japan will make persistent effort in directly engaging with the Taliban to change their course, in order to ensure respect for human rights of all Afghans, including the elimination of measures that restrict the rights of women and girls, and political inclusiveness.
