The Situation in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
(Statement by Press Secretary KOBAYASHI Maki)
February 2, 2024
- Japan has strongly called for the implementation of free and fair elections with broad participation of the Venezuelan people for the early and peaceful restoration of democracy in Venezuela. We attach great importance to the political agreement signed in Barbados between the Venezuelan parties in October last year for free and fair elections, including the 2024 presidential election.
- On January 26, the Supreme Court of Venezuela ruled in favor of the Government of Venezuela's decision to suspend the eligibility of opposition parties’ leaders to hold public office, thus disqualifying them from participating in the 2024 presidential election. Japan is concerned about the recent developments in Venezuela, including this ruling, from the perspective of the implementation of free and fair elections with broad participation, and calls for the steady implementation of the agreement reached in October last year.
- Japan will continue to promote efforts to improve the socio-economic situation in Venezuela in cooperation with regional and international organizations as well as countries concerned.
