Courtesy Call on State Minister Tsuji by Co-Chairs of Intergovernmental Negotiation on Security Council Reform (IGN)

Mr. TSUJI Kiyoto, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from H.E. Ambassador Tareq M. A. M. AlBanai, Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations(UN) and H. E. Ambassador Alexander Marschik, Permanent Representative of Austria to the UN, Co-Chairs of Intergovernmental Negotiation on Security Council Reform (IGN), who are visiting Japan at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on January 12, from 9:50 to 10:10 (local time) for 20 minutes. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- State Minister Tsuji welcomed the visit of the two UN Permanent Representatives to Japan and emphasized the importance of strengthening the functions of the UN, including Security Council reform, in order to restore trust in the UN, which has been damaged. Furthermore, he stated that Japan will continue to firmly support the work by the two UN Permanent Representatives as IGN Co-Chairs.
- In response, the two UN Permanent Representatives thanked for the invitation and stated that they will further strengthen cooperation with Japan on issues in the international arena including Security Council reform.
- The both sides shared the view that this year, later of which has the Summit of the Future, is an important year for Security Council reform and concurred that they will continue to cooperate to achieve concrete progress.
