Passing of crew members of the U.S. Forces Japan
(Statement by Foreign Minister KAMIKAWA Yoko)

December 6, 2023
  1. On December 6, 2023, the U.S. Air Force Special Operation Command announced the passing of eight crew members due to the crash of U.S. Airforce CV-22 Osprey on November 29. It is regrettable that the crew members could not return safely despite the collective search and rescue effort between our two governments and our sincere prayer.
  2. These crew members devoted themselves to carrying out their missions day and night to maintain peace and security of Japan and the surrounding region. The deterrence by the Japan-U.S. Alliance is made possible by the strong determination of the members of the U.S. Forces Japan who risk their lives in carrying out their missions and with the support from their family members.
  3. The Government of Japan expresses its deepest respect and gratitude to their contributions to the Japan-U.S. Alliance. I would like to extend my sincere condolences for the loss of eight crew members and extend my deepest sympathy to their bereaved families.
  4. The Government of Japan is resolved to ensure the safety of the Japanese people and members of the U.S. Forces Japan, which is our top priority. It is determined to cooperate with the United States to maintain peace and security in Japan and the surrounding region.
