Letter from Foreign Minister Kamikawa to The Rt Hon James Cleverly MP, Secretary of State for the Home Department (former Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs) of the United Kingdom

On November 15, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs sent a letter to The Rt Hon James CLEVERLY MP, Secretary of State for the Home Department of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland following his departure from Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.

  1. In the letter, Minister Kamikawa paid her heartfelt respect to Secretary Cleverly’s strong leadership during his tenure as Foreign Secretary, and noting that Secretary Cleverly was the first counterpart to have an in-person Foreign Minister’s meeting since she took office, she conveyed that she took pride in the fruitful achievements made with Secretary Cleverly, including the holding of the Japan-UK “2+2” and the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation on People-to-People Exchanges.
  2. In addition, Minister Kamikawa expressed her congratulations on Secretary Cleverly’s appointment as Secretary of State for the Home Department, noting that it was unfortunate to receive the news of his departure from Foreign Secretary at a time when the two Ministers were determined to further accelerate Japan-UK relations together, and conveyed the message that she would appreciate assistance from Secretary Cleverly in further strengthening Japan-UK relations from his new position.
