Japan-Peru Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On September 1, commencing at 12:30 p.m., Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a working lunch with H.E. Ms. Ana Cecilia Gervasi Diaz, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Peru,who is visiting Japan, for approximately 70 minutes, and on the same day, commencing at 4:35 p.m., held a foreign ministers’ meeting with Minister Gervasi for approximately 40 minutes.

The foreign ministers' meeting took place aboard the Peruvian Navy sailing ship “Unión”, which has been calling at the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal since August 30.

  1. At the outset, Minister Hayashi welcomed Minister Gervasi’s visit to Japan, and expressed his pleasure at their reciprocal visits being realized this year, which marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Peru. He also welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation on Antarctic Research and the Memorandum of Cooperation on Diplomatic Training.
  2. The two ministers shared the view that the two countries, as important "strategic partners" that share values and principles, would strengthen their relations further in a wide range of areas, such as maintaining a free and open international order based on the rule of the law, the economic area including the CPTPP, and the cultural area including people-to-people exchange, and also continue to work together towards APEC 2024 chaired by Peru. The two ministers also reaffirmed the importance of the Nikkei community.
  3. Regarding the recently initiated discharge of ALPS treated water into the ocean, Minister Hayashi explained Japan's position, referring to the IAEA's assessment in its Comprehensive Report, and Minister Gervasi stated that Peru, as a fellow maritime nation, understands and trusts Japan’s efforts.
  4. The two ministers exchanged views on regional and international affairs, including the situations in Ukraine, East Asia, and Latin America, as well as cooperation in the international arena, and reaffirmed the importance of maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law.
