Incident including the intrusion and arson at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Sweden in the Republic of Iraq

  1. On July 20th (local time), protesters against the Quran burning rally in Sweden intruded into the Embassy of Sweden in Iraq and conducted acts which included setting parts of the building on fire.
  2. Japan strongly condemns this act by the protesters. Japan also calls on the Iraqi Government to address this issue appropriately and to make efforts to prevent the recurrence of such acts, including the protection of the premises of diplomatic missions in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
  3. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of all parties concerned to respect the religious beliefs of others and resolve issues through dialogue.
