Meeting Between State Minister for Foreign Affairs TAKEI Shunsuke and Mr. Salvatore Sciacchitano, President of the Council, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)

On June 1, commencing at 9:25 a.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. TAKEI Shunsuke, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with Mr. Salvatore Sciacchitano, President of the Council, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), who was visiting Japan at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- State Minister Takei welcomed President Sciacchitano’s visit to Japan and expressed his respect for the President’s leadership in the development and safety of international civil aviation. State Minister Takei also expressed his intention to strengthen the relationship between Japan and the ICAO, making use of the momentum of this visit and 70th anniversary of Japan’s accession to the ICAO this year. In response, President Sciacchitano stated that Japan is an important partner to the ICAO, expressed his deep gratitude for Japan’s contributions, and stated his hope that Japan would continue to play a significant role.
- On May 31, North Korea launched what it referred to as “military reconnaissance satellite” using ballistic missile technology. State Minister Takei stated that any launch using ballistic missile technology by North Korea was a violation of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, even if North Korea provides prior notification or calls it as a “satellite” launch. He added that Japan would continue to urge North Korea to comply with relevant Security Council resolutions and work closely with President Sciacchitano and relevant countries to ensure North Korea’s compliance with relevant ICAO regulations to ensure the safety of international civil aviation.
In response, President Sciacchitano stated that he shared Japan’s concerns and expressed his intention to ensure the safety of international civil aviation in cooperation with other international organizations. - Mr. Takei also mentioned the need to increase the number and seniority of Japanese staff members. President Sciacchitano stated that he would like to utilize more Japanese human resources.
