Japan-the United Arab Emirates Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Foreign Minister HAYASHI held a meeting with UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah

On June 12, commencing at 11:00 a.m. for approximately 70 minutes, H.E. Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, who is visiting Japan. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Hayashi welcomed H.H. Sheikh Abdullah’s visit to Japan for the first time in five years and stated that the cooperation between Japan and the UAE covers a wide range of areas, and is no longer limited to the boundaries of the two countries, and is now taking place in various locations, including in the Middle East region and third countries. Minister Hayashi also expressed appreciation for the UAE’s cooperation in the evacuation of Japanese nationals from Sudan. In response, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah expressed his strong commitment to further strengthening the bilateral relationship with Japan.
  2. Minister Hayashi emphasized the importance of the rule of law and the principles of the UN Charter, and stated that the leaders of G7, invited countries and Ukraine confirmed the point the G7 Hiroshima Summit. In response, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah stated that the UAE would like to work together with Japan including in cooperation in the UN Security Council.
  3. The two Ministers concurred on continuing to work together under the Comprehensive and Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI), and exchanged views on cooperation in the fields of defense and on the situation in Ukraine.
  4. In addition, the two Ministers exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and East Asia, including North Korea.
