Japan-Malaysia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On December 22, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.E. Dato’Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, for about 25 minutes from 12:40. The overview of the talk is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Hayashi reiterated his congratulatory message on Minister Zambry’s appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and expressed his sympathy over the landslide that occurred on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur on December 16, Minister Hayashi also stated his intention to take this opportunity to build a close relationship with Minister Zambry. In response, Minister Zambry stated that he looks forward to working with Minister Hayashi.
  2. Minister Hayashi stated that in this year marking the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations and the 40th anniversary of Malaysia’s Look East Policy, the two countries have been able to confirm their robust ties by holding many commemorative events. Referring to the recently formed National Security Strategy (NSS), Minister Hayashi expressed his intention to promote bilateral cooperation in a variety of areas, , including the economy, security, the stable supply of LNG from Malaysia, and the establishment of a branch campus of the University of Tsukuba in Malaysia. In response, Minister Zambry expressed his intention to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
  3. Minister Hayashi stated his intention to strengthen cooperation towards the realization of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” and the two ministers exchanged views, and confirmed their cooperation on various regional and international challenges such as the situation in the East and South China Seas, the situation in Ukraine, dealing with North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues as well as, and the abductions issue, the situation in Myanmar, nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and strengthening functions of the United Nations, including UN Security Council reform.
  4. The two ministers confirmed that they will closely work for the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation next year.
