Japan-Micronesia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On September 1, commencing at 1:55 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a telephone talk with Hon. Kandhi A. ELIEISAR, Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). The overview of the talk is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Hayashi stated that Japan and the FSM are friends with deep historical ties and he would like to cooperate with Secretary Elieisar in order to further strengthen the bilateral relations and realize a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific”. Secretary Elieisar thanked, on behalf of the Government and people of Micronesia, Prime Miniser Kishida, Minister Hayashi, and the people of Japan for their friendship toward the FSM and their generous support in many areas through the bilateral channel and Pacific Island countries as a whole. Also, he expressed his hope that Japan would continue to play a major role in the region with like-minded countries.
- Minister Hayashi stated that Japan would continue to provide assistance based on the needs of the FSM in various fields under its "Pacific Bond Policy." With respect to the ALPS treated water, he stated Japan would advance its efforts in a transparent manner in accordance with the domestic and international safety standards in close cooperation with international community including the IAEA.
- The two sides exchanged their views on several issues including regional security. They concurred that Japan and the FSM would continue to cooperate in the international arena, strengthen bilateral relations, and work closely on North Korea related issues including the abductions, nuclear and missile issues.
