Japan-Solomon Islands Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On August 18, commencing at 3:30 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a telephone talk with the Hon. Jeremiah MANELE, Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade of the Solomon Islands. The overview of the talk is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Hayashi stated that Japan has consistently nurtured friendship with the Solomon Islands since the end of World War II and will make efforts to further strengthen the relationship with the Solomon Islands, mentioning that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal. In response, Minister Manele expressed his sincere appreciation for Japan’s longstanding support to the Solomon Islands in several areas including infrastructure and education.
- The two Ministers exchanged their views on the status of the security cooperation agreement between China and the Solomon Islands, following up on previous interactions between the two governments. Minister Hayashi stressed the importance of alleviating the concerns raised by relevant countries.
- Minister Hayashi also stated, regarding the handling of ALPS treated water, Japan will continue its efforts in a transparent manner in accordance with domestic and international safety standards in close cooperation with international community including the IAEA.
- The two Ministers concurred that Japan and the Solomon Islands will continue to cooperate in the international arena, strengthen the relations between Japan and the Solomon Islands, and work closely on North Korea related issues including the abductions, nuclear and missile issues.
