Video Conference between Foreign Minister Hayashi and H.E. Ms. Antonia Urrejola Noguera, Minister-Designate of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Chile

On February 4, commencing at 9:40 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a video conference with H.E. Ms. Antonia Urrejola Noguera, Minister-Designate of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Chile. The overview of the talk is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Hayashi congratulated Ms. Urrejola on her appointment as Minister-Designate of Foreign Affairs, and expressed Japan’s intention to further deepen traditionally friendly relations between Japan and Chile which are strategic partners, on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Minister-Designate Urrejola stated that this was the first meeting with a foreign dignitary.
- Minister Hayashi explained the efforts to realize the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” promoted by Japan. Both sides coincided on the importance of universal values and the cooperation of both countries for the stability of the Indo-Pacific region. Both sides also exchanged views on North Korea, including the recent series of missile launches, and affirmed that they would continue to coordinate in dealing with North Korea, including the abductions issue.
- Minister Hayashi expressed his intention to further strengthen economic relations that are already very active between the two countries and, from that point of view, his wish for Chile’s prompt ratification of CPTPP.
- In addition, both sides agreed to enhance relations in areas such as the establishment of 5G networks that ensure openness and diversity, and the use of hydrogen.
