Exchange of Diplomatic Notes for the Entry into Force of the Protocol Amending the Japan-UK Nuclear Co-operation Agreement

- The exchange of diplomatic notes for the entry into force of the “Protocol Amending the Agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for Co-operation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy” took place in London, on August 18. Accordingly, pursuant to the provisions of this Protocol (paragraph 1 of Article 15), this Protocol will enter into force on September 1, 2021, the date agreed by the Contracting Parties through the said exchange of diplomatic notes. This Protocol was signed at London on December 16, 2020, and was approved in the Japanese Diet on June 4, 2021.
- This Protocol amends part of the current Agreement, which entered into force in 1998, in order to reflect in particular the replacement of safeguards arrangements in the UK following the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community.
- The legal framework between Japan and the UK for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy continues to be ensured by the conclusion of this Protocol.
