Japan-Canada Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On August 12, commencing at 9:30 am, for 15 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a telephone talk with the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada. The overview of the telephone talk is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Garneau explained the state of play of the case of Mr. Michael Spavor, who was detained in China, and Foreign Minister Motegi stated that he had been paying close attention to the situation with concern. In response, Minister Garneau expressed his gratitude to the support extended by the Government of Japan. In this regard, the two ministers reaffirmed that it is important that universal values of the international community such as freedom, respect for fundamental human rights, and the rule of law are ensured in China as well, including for this case.
- Regarding the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Minister Motegi expressed his appreciation to Canada for its support, and stated that he would also make every effort to realize a safe and secure Paralympic Games. In response, Foreign Minister Garneau congratulated Japan for the success of the Olympic Games and reiterated his support for the Paralympic Games.
