4th Ministerial Meeting of the Stockholm Initiative for Nuclear Disarmament and the Non-Proliferation Treaty

On July 5, Mr. WASHIO Eiichiro, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, virtually attended the 4th Stockholm Ministerial Meeting on Nuclear Disarmament and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
- The meeting was co-hosted by H.E. Ms. María Aranzazu GONZALEZ Laya, Minister for Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain, H.E. Ms. Ann LINDE, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden and H.E. Mr. Heiko MAAS, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany.
- At the meeting, the participants discussed current trends and challenges in the disarmament arena, as well as priorities ahead of the 10th NPT Review Conference.
- State Minister WASHIO emphasized the importance of seeking concrete measures which can serve as a common ground to work together, while addressing both existing security threats and humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons, and the importance of achieving a meaningful outcome at the tenth NPT Review Conference. In addition, State Minister WASHIO introduced our efforts to find a common ground and encouraged to strengthen outreach activities to other countries, utilizing the outcome documents of the Initiative. He also reiterated Japan's deep concern on North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles and emphasized the importance of full implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
- The participants shared their views on cooperating further in their efforts leading up to the 10th NPT Review Conference.
