Japan-Brunei Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On May 26, commencing at 11:30 a.m. for 30 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof, Minister of Foreign Affairs II, Brunei Darussalam. The overview of the talk is as follows.

  1. The two ministers held an exchange of views on the situation in Myanmar. Minister Motegi expressed his respect for the initiatives taken by Brunei as the Chair of ASEAN. Furthermore, Minister Motegi welcomed the Five-Point Consensus announced at the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting and mentioned that hereafter the tangible progress of the Consensus is extremely important and expressing Japan’s intention to extend its cooperation.
  2. In response, Minister Erywan explained, in detail, the initiatives of ASEAN since the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting and plans for the future. The two ministers concurred the view to continue to coordinate closely.
  3. Minister Motegi stated that Japan will extend the assistance of 800,000 US dollars to improve cold chain in Brunei as part of the response to COVID-19. Minister Erywan expressed his gratitude for Japan’s assistance.
