Japan-EU Foreign Ministers' Telephone Talk

On November 16, commencing at 5:00 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission, upon the request from High Representative Borrell. The overview of the talk is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Motegi stated that he was pleased to have a telephone talk with High Representative Borrell for the first time since March 2020 and that he would like to discuss the way forward to strengthen Japan-EU cooperation.
  2. Minister Motegi welcomed the EU’s increasing interest and engagement in the Indo-Pacific as a global partner. Minister Motegi and High Representative Borrell shared the view that the Japan-EU cooperation along with the US with its new administration to be inaugurated is important to realize a “ Free and Open Indo-Pacific”.
  3. They shared the view to continue working closely with each other on various issues faced by the international community, such as response to Covid-19, as well as on regional affairs.
