Japan-EU Foreign Ministers' Telephone Talk

On November 16, commencing at 5:00 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission, upon the request from High Representative Borrell. The overview of the talk is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Motegi stated that he was pleased to have a telephone talk with High Representative Borrell for the first time since March 2020 and that he would like to discuss the way forward to strengthen Japan-EU cooperation.
- Minister Motegi welcomed the EU’s increasing interest and engagement in the Indo-Pacific as a global partner. Minister Motegi and High Representative Borrell shared the view that the Japan-EU cooperation along with the US with its new administration to be inaugurated is important to realize a “ Free and Open Indo-Pacific”.
- They shared the view to continue working closely with each other on various issues faced by the international community, such as response to Covid-19, as well as on regional affairs.
